Advancing Prompting

Six moves that push a good answer to one you would actually send

What you'll be able to do

  • Pick the right advanced technique for the problem in front of you
  • Chain techniques into a single draft-to-final workflow
  • Use the matching tool for each technique without leaving the site

Past the basics

T.E.C.R.E.I. gets you a complete, usable answer. These six techniques get you an answer you would stake your name on. Each one has a tool on this site so you can practice it on real work. Click any card to open its studio.

The six techniques

Technique

Reverse Prompting

Describe the goal and let AI design the best prompt, then run it. You bring the goal and the data; AI brings the structure.

Use it when: you do a task only a few times a year and have no template to lean on.

Recursive Prompting

Run a prompt through three sharpening passes: add constraints, remove ambiguity, then deepen the reasoning.

Use it when: a prompt you reuse weekly keeps returning answers that are fine but not great.

Self-Critique & Verification Loops

Make AI grade its own work, surface its assumptions, and flag what it is unsure of before you ever see it.

Use it when: the answer sounds confident and you need to know where it is actually weak.

Forcing Deeper Reasoning & Structured Thought

Tell AI to think step by step and answer in a structure, a table, an outline, a decision tree, so the logic is visible.

Use it when: the problem has moving parts and a one-paragraph answer hides the thinking.

Simulating Debate

Have AI argue several sides against each other, then judge the strongest case, so blind spots surface before you decide.

Use it when: you are weighing a real decision and want the case against it, not just for it.

Varying Creative Temperature

Dial the answer from precise and predictable to loose and inventive by telling AI how much range you want.

Use it when: you need ten wild ideas, or the opposite, one exact and literal answer.

Stack them: one draft, three passes

The techniques are strongest combined. Here is a single prompt that chains deeper reasoning, self-critique, and a clean rewrite for a grant letter of inquiry to a foundation that reads thirty of them a week. Copy it and run it on a real draft.

I am going to give you a draft of a donor thank-you letter. Work in three passes and label each one.

PASS 1 (deepen): Think step by step about who reads this and what would make them act. Lay your reasoning out as a short bulleted outline before you touch the draft.

PASS 2 (critique): Attack the draft like a skeptical reader. List the three weakest claims, anything unverified, and one way it could land badly.

PASS 3 (rewrite): Produce a final version that fixes every issue you found. Mark any fact I still need to verify with [verify].

Here is the draft:
"""
[PASTE YOUR DRAFT]
"""

The discipline

Run the critique pass until AI struggles to find a real problem. Then, and only then, put your own eyes on it. Speed is the gift; verification is the price.
