Varying Creative Temperature
The same request can come back safe and predictable or wild and surprising. You control which. Tell AI how much range you want and the answer changes completely.
1. What this does for you
'Temperature' is the setting that decides how adventurous an answer is. Low temperature gives you the expected, literal answer; high temperature gives you range and surprise. In a chat tool you set it with words: a simple 1-to-10 dial. Use a high dial when you want ten ideas you would never have reached alone. Use a low dial when you want one exact, conventional answer you can ship. Most people only ever get the middle, and wonder why brainstorms feel flat.
2. What to type into your AI
Copy the box below. Replace the words in [BRACKETS] with your own info. Then paste it into Claude or ChatGPT.
I am going to give you a task and a creativity dial from 1 to 10. 1 means: exact, literal, safe. Give me the most expected, conventional answer with no flourishes. 10 means: surprising, divergent. Take real swings and show me options I would not have thought of myself. TASK: """ [DESCRIBE WHAT YOU WANT, e.g. "names for our new volunteer program" or "rewrite this one sentence to be warmer"] """ CREATIVITY DIAL: [PICK A NUMBER 1-10] HOW MANY OPTIONS: [e.g. 1, or 10] If the dial is above 7, prioritize range and surprise over polish. If it is below 4, prioritize accuracy and convention over novelty. Label nothing; just give me the options at the setting I chose.

Brainstorm at a high dial, then tighten at a low one
I am going to give you a task and a creativity dial from 1 to 10. 1 = exact, literal, safe. 10 = surprising, divergent. TASK: """ Names for a new Saturday program that pairs retired tradespeople with teenagers to fix up donated bikes. """ CREATIVITY DIAL: 8 HOW MANY OPTIONS: 10 If the dial is above 7, prioritize range and surprise over polish. (Then, to tighten the winner, run again at dial 2: "Rewrite 'Wrench & Wisdom' as three plain program names a grant officer would take seriously.")
Naming a new after-school science club for 6th graders
I am going to give you a task and a creativity dial from 1 to 10. 1 = exact, literal, safe. 10 = surprising, divergent. TASK: """ Give me names for a new after-school science club. It meets Thursdays, 6th grade, hands-on experiments. I want names that sound fun to an 11-year-old but still fine to print on a permission slip. """ CREATIVITY DIAL: 9 HOW MANY OPTIONS: 10 If the dial is above 7, prioritize range and surprise over polish. (Then: "Take option 4, the one about the lab goggles. Rerun it at dial 2 so it reads clean on a flyer and a parent email.")
Naming a new curbside recycling awareness campaign
I am going to give you a task and a creativity dial from 1 to 10. 1 = exact, literal, safe. 10 = surprising, divergent. TASK: """ Give me names for a citywide curbside recycling awareness campaign. The goal is to get residents to rinse and sort their bins correctly. Keep the tone neutral and non-partisan, friendly, and easy to say out loud. """ CREATIVITY DIAL: 8 HOW MANY OPTIONS: 10 If the dial is above 7, prioritize range and surprise over polish. (Then: "Take the 'Sort It Out' direction. Rerun it at dial 2 so it fits on a bin sticker and a mailer without sounding gimmicky.")
Brainstorming slogans for a fall jobsite safety push
I am going to give you a task and a creativity dial from 1 to 10. 1 = exact, literal, safe. 10 = surprising, divergent. TASK: """ Give me slogans for a fall safety push on our framing crews. The focus is fall protection and tying off every time up high. Keep it short and plain, the kind of thing that fits on a hard hat sticker or a banner by the gate. """ CREATIVITY DIAL: 8 HOW MANY OPTIONS: 10 If the dial is above 7, prioritize range and surprise over polish. (Then: "Take the 'Tie Off Every Time' one. Rerun it at dial 2 so it reads clean on a banner and in a toolbox talk.")
Naming a fall promo for a neighborhood coffee shop
I am going to give you a task and a creativity dial from 1 to 10. 1 = exact, literal, safe. 10 = surprising, divergent. TASK: """ Give me names for a fall promo at my coffee shop. It is a buy-nine-get-one punch card plus a seasonal maple latte. I want names that feel local and warm, easy to say when a regular walks in. """ CREATIVITY DIAL: 9 HOW MANY OPTIONS: 10 If the dial is above 7, prioritize range and surprise over polish. (Then: "Take the 'Leaf Us a Visit' direction. Rerun it at dial 2 so it fits on a chalkboard and an Instagram caption without trying too hard.")
Naming the year-end giving campaign
I am going to give you a task and a creativity dial from 1 to 10. 1 = exact, literal, safe. 10 = surprising, divergent. TASK: """ Give me names for our year-end giving campaign. We fund after-school meals for kids in three neighborhoods. I want names with heart that still work in an email subject line and a donation page header. """ CREATIVITY DIAL: 8 HOW MANY OPTIONS: 10 If the dial is above 7, prioritize range and surprise over polish. (Then: "Take the 'Fill a Seat at the Table' direction. Rerun it at dial 2 so it fits a subject line and a donor letter without sounding overwrought.")
Naming a year-round small-business advisory package
I am going to give you a task and a creativity dial from 1 to 10. 1 = exact, literal, safe. 10 = surprising, divergent. TASK: """ Give me names for a year-round advisory package for my small-business clients. It is more than tax prep: quarterly check-ins, cash-flow reviews, and planning. I want names that sound approachable, not stuffy, and still fine on an engagement letter. """ CREATIVITY DIAL: 8 HOW MANY OPTIONS: 10 If the dial is above 7, prioritize range and surprise over polish. (Then: "Take the 'Numbers That Talk Back' direction. Rerun it at dial 2 so it reads professional on an engagement letter and a rate sheet.")
Titling a new photo series for a gallery show
I am going to give you a task and a creativity dial from 1 to 10. 1 = exact, literal, safe. 10 = surprising, divergent. TASK: """ Give me titles for a new photo series. It is twelve shots of empty diners at 3am, warm light, nobody there. I want titles with mood that still work on a wall card and a show postcard. """ CREATIVITY DIAL: 9 HOW MANY OPTIONS: 10 If the dial is above 7, prioritize range and surprise over polish. (Then: "Take the 'Last Call for Nobody' direction. Rerun it at dial 2 so it reads clean on a wall card and a portfolio caption.")
3. What to do with the answer
- Decide what you actually need: range (many surprising options) or precision (one safe answer).
- Paste the prompt into Claude or Gemini and set the dial. Above 7 for ideas, below 4 for exact work.
- For brainstorming, set the dial to 8 to 10 and ask for ten options. Expect a few duds; you only need one spark.
- Pick the option with promise, then run it again at a dial of 2 to make it precise and presentable.
- For anything factual, like a policy line or a number, keep the dial low. High temperature is for ideas, not facts.
Why this works
Left on its own, AI hedges toward the middle: safe enough to be useless for brainstorming, loose enough to be risky for facts. Naming the dial puts you in control of the tradeoff. High when you want range, low when you want certainty. The trick is using both in sequence: go wide to find the idea, then go narrow to finish it.
