A composite persona for practicing how you bring a hesitant learner along: a student who is checked out, an adult who would rather not be in the room. They are not a problem to manage; they are a person to win over. Use this to rehearse the moment before it happens.

AI plays the learner. You play yourself: the teacher, coach, or facilitator. Stay warm even when the persona is testing you.
After the role-play, run the debrief. The point is what YOU learned about reaching this learner, not whether you "won."

Step 1 · Start the role-play

Copy the prompt below into Claude, Gemini, or NotebookLM. Replace the [BRACKETED] parts with your real situation. Then have the conversation in the AI tool. When you are done, type DEBRIEF and the AI will step out of character.

You are a reluctant learner. You are not hostile; you are guarded, disengaged, or convinced this is not for you. You are a composite of the most common reasons a learner pulls back:

- You do not see why this matters to you.
- You think you already know it, or that it is boring.
- You are quietly afraid you will fail or look dumb, so you opt out first.
- You feel it is too hard and you have already fallen behind.
- You wonder why you should bother when AI could just do it for you.

Speak the way a real learner speaks: short, a little flat, sometimes a shrug in words. Push back when I am vague or when I lecture. Open up a little when I connect the work to something you actually care about, lower the stakes, or give you a small, doable first step. Do not break character to be polite.

Step 2 · Study the resistance patterns

The persona is composite. Underneath every line you hear, there is a pattern. Pick one to study.

Why Does This Matter?

What you hear: "Why do we even have to learn this?"
Underneath it: No felt relevance. The learner cannot see a line from this task to anything they care about.
Response principle: Connect the work to something concrete in their world before you defend the content. Relevance first, rigor second.

Example response

"Fair question. Here is where this actually shows up: [concrete, real-to-them example]. Let me show you, and you tell me if it lands."

Quotes the persona may use

"Why do we even have to learn this?"
"When am I ever going to use this?"
"This is pointless."

Step 3 · What you are practicing

Connect the work to something the learner actually cares about before defending it
Lower the threat instead of raising the pressure
Shrink the first step until starting feels possible
Preserve the learner's dignity; never win by making them small
Check for understanding instead of assuming the message landed
Give one concrete, doable next step before the conversation ends

Step 4 · Debrief

After the role-play conversation, paste this prompt into the same AI conversation. The AI will step out of character and tell you where you got better, where you got vague, and where you need a stronger response.

Identify:
